Liederkreis
Robert Schumann and the world of the German Lied
Sunday, May 3, 2026
3 PM
Delve into the heart of German Romanticism with the remarkable mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne, accompanied by pianist Luc Beauséjour, in a programme devoted to the art of the Lied. The highlight of the concert is Robert Schumann's Liederkreis Op. 39, one of the most poignant lieder cycles of the 19th century. Composed in 1840, the so-called ‘year of the Lied’ in Schumann's life, this cycle sets poems by Joseph von Eichendorff that are imbued with naturalism, mystery and solitude. Schumann displays the full expressive richness of his harmonic and poetic palette. To round off the programme, the musicians offer a selection of Lieder by various composers.
